The second half of this should be: "...and help them to keep giving a shit." I've seen too many times to count management completely squashing out any passion that employees might have for the company or product. The most common ways I think are micromanaging and soliciting feedback / ideas then completely ignoring it. Both will immediately have your employees checking out and saying to themselves "fine, I'll show up, do what I'm told, then clock out at 5."
