Helping Students See How Math Benefits Them in the Long Run
- MeinBlutIstBlau 6y agoThe hardest of the hardcore maths I do on a daily basis is calculating percentages and actively knowing when to multiply or divide by a percentage. Then also knowing what value that is. The only other one I can think of is dimensional analysis which sort of goes hand in hand with the percentages thing. But with this you can make conversions into different units as well. Aside from just standard accounting, what does trigonometry and calculus really benefit to the average working class individual?

In short, it (a) teaches where all the good things in life comes from (i.e., the same reason we study the ancient Egyptians), it (b) gives you practice with logical reasoning, and (c) each individual math skill usually has a non-math analogue, which performing the skill helps practice or discover. Here's an example of the life lessons I teach my students from learning how to do Taylor Series: https://mindmatters.ai/2019/08/doing-the-impossible-a-step-by-step-guide/ https://mindmatters.ai/2019/08/doing-the-impossible-a-step-b...
