I think they are taking a bit hit on each console sold.
But it seems to be good value for the buyer :)
I have a hacked PS3 that does the same thing with retroarch, but it might be time to upgrade that as the xbox systems are almost like a PC in hardware performance and should be able to do things like Wii U and perhaps even PS3 emulation?
- the_only_law 6y agoI wondered a while back around the potential of newer Xbox consoles given their PC-like architecture. When I tried to do some research, I was surprised to find that most modders / casual hackers have had no luck with the Xbox One and basically nothing interesting from security researchers on it.
- doikor 6y agoHere is an excellent talk about the Xbox One security (and Series X|S should be quite similar) by the person who is in charge of security on the Xbox platform. https://youtu.be/U7VwtOrwceo https://youtu.be/U7VwtOrwceo Basically it boils down to trust NOTHING outside the actual SoC chip (so stuff like RAM, Flash/HDD, optical dics, etc cannot be trusted). The SoC is made on 28nm (Series X|S 7nm) process so physically attacking it is very hard/expensive. Also goes into the difference between Windows (PC) and Xbox (Console) security. On PC the owner/admin wants the help keep the system secure as it gets attacked by malicious parties from the internet. On console the owner is usually the bad guy (the one doing the attacking) and thus needs a very different approach. Also stuff like Microsoft Pluton are direct descendants of the stuff done for Xbox and Live.

- jsheard 6y agoThis was possible on the last generation Xbox One systems as well, Microsoft knew what they were getting into by keeping devkit mode on the Xbox Series X/S
- el_oni 6y agoMaybe. But another thing to consider is that if you allow emulation and homebrew you remove two of the three crowds that are trying to crack your security. If you keep it locked down you will have those crowds trying to bypass security and piracy will benefit from that.
