Interestingly I have seen this pattern in all kinds of software businesses, but for most it tended to be less of a core business problem. I'm still wondering if the businesses would work better if the focus on technical excellency could be instilled and especially which parts of the company would have to suffer for it and what the ultimate outcome would be. I'm convinced that at least for some companies, it simply can't be the winning strategy.
