You Shouldn’t Ask a Charity How It Spends Your Donation
- Overtonwindow 6y agoThis is so bad it’s borderline criminal. You should absolutely ask a nonprofit how it is spending your donation, and they should be able to tell you. There are far too many nonprofits in this world that are raking in millions, and millions of dollars, and not accomplishing anything. There is next zero accountability for nonprofits, so you should absolutely ask questions.
- uberman 6y agoThe only reason not to ask is if you don't want to be disappointed by what you are told. If you have any concerns about a charity and they can't tell you what percentage of your contribution will go to their stated cause or can't tell you what percentage of donations go to marketing, fundraising, and salaries then you should not give. For example if you don't ask or they will not tell you, how would you know that only 4% of every dollar given to "Kids Wish Network" finds it way to helping kids. https://www.cnn.com/2013/06/13/us/worst-charities/index.html https://www.cnn.com/2013/06/13/us/worst-charities/index.html
- chrisbennet 6y agoI couldn't read the article but as an aside, a charity is a non-profit but a non-profit isn't necessarily a charity. https://www.medicaleconomics.com/view/how-nonprofit-hospitals-get-away-biggest-rip-america https://www.medicaleconomics.com/view/how-nonprofit-hospital... Data point: My father wanted to donate his house to the local hospital when he died. I told him I'd support whatever he wanted to do but I pointed out the the president of that hospital earned $1.8 million a year. (He changed his mind.)
