The Logic of Pandemic Restrictions Is Falling Apart
- AnimalMuppet 6y agoTL;DR: Not the logic of having restrictions - that makes sense. But the internal inconsistencies are glaringly stupid. You can't have people gather for Thanksgiving, but you can go to restaurants that have inadequate screening? That makes no sense, and just makes the idea of restrictions look stupid.
- jfengel 6y agoWe really shouldn't expect laws and regulations to make perfect sense. They're all compromises, between multiple stakeholders, multiple world-views, and multiple rule-makers. Consistency would be great, but it's too much to ask in a big, complex world. It doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for it. We can do better. But it's also worth understanding enough of the rule-making process to avoid saying, "This thing is inconsistent therefore the entire process is unsalvageable," which is what I see too often. Governments, like businesses, are made up of people doing their best to achieve some kind of consensus with all of the other people, and having to do so in a world that is both constantly changing and constantly necessitating some kind of action.
