He was 100% aware that he was doing an illegal movement in that split-second and he made the conscious decision to do it. In soccer a non-goalkeeper player never uses the hand to touch the ball. There is no unconscious instinct to go after the ball with your hand. Quite the contrary btw. I just played for hobby and often when something will fall my instinct is to move my feet to ease the fall, not try to catch with my hand.
