Russian hostility only really began in 2008, prior to that Russia really tried to have good relations with the U.S. They even wanted to join NATO and offered to help in Iraq. It's the U.S. that soured the relations, not Russia. EDIT: I am distinguishing Russia from the Soviet Union here.
