As a user of Inkscape, it seems to be doing just fine. They released version 1.0 within the past year (after a decade of 0.x), and it works just fine. AFAIK, the project leaders are running into some issues with the SVG standards body on what the next direction should be. Inkscape is seeing requests for many new features, like multi-page drawings, that the SVG group does not want to implement, so Inkscape is at a crossroads on trying to maintain standards compliance while having a standards body that doesn’t seem to want to do anything.
