Directly contradicting current Apple Marketing.
I lothe Apple(and other unethical companies) for lying in their ads.
Any benefits of macOS are instantly gone because you cannot Trust Apple to tell the truth. It's as unreliable as Google keeping a service around.
- m463 6y agoI first started getting an idea that something was amiss with apple years and years ago. "Apple machines don't get viruses" Everyone "knew" that. Everyone knew that apple machines were secure. Turns out there were plenty of things going on with apple just like other companies. The difference was that apple would actively persecute (even prosecute) people who explored or discovered these things. Basically apple marketing was able to prevent a lot of vulnerabilities from publicity. Probably marketing 101, protect your brand.
- Bud 6y agoPlease cite evidence for these extraordinary claims. Who, precisely, did Apple "prosecute" for "exploring" security issues? Please don't post made-up things in public. As an aside, no, everyone did not "know" that Macs don't get viruses. But yes, most informed people were aware that Macs were somewhat less susceptible to malware for a while. Please don't exaggerate wildly.
- m463 6y agoI cannot find the specific articles, but there were security researchers who would find some sort of apple problem and would be contacted by apple and go dark. This was probably the era when osx was getting off the ground. I assume they were protecting their brand, but I always thought it was a little ingenuine (on the other hand, security researchers are not all college professors with good intentions) I think apple finally had to cave when there problems too large to ignore. https://www.ibtimes.com/apple-yanks-mac-virus-immunity-claims-website-removing-reality-distortion-good-pr-704221 https://www.ibtimes.com/apple-yanks-mac-virus-immunity-claim...
- grishka 6y agoApple's marketing basically boils down to "please trust us that we respect your privacy because we tell you so". You can at least reverse engineer the hardware you own and the software on it, but what about cloud services they're pushing so hard? You don't, and can't, know what happens to your data in someone else's infrastructure.
- hu3 6y agoWell we do know they dropped iCloud end-to-end ecryption after FBI complained. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-fbi-icloud-exclusive-idUSKBN1ZK1CT https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-fbi-icloud-exclusiv... We also know that Apple handed all chinese cloud data to the goverment by changing host to a state firm. https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/28/17055088/apple-chinese-icloud-accounts-government-privacy-speed https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/28/17055088/apple-chinese-ic...
- zepto 6y agoYou don’t have any evidence to support the claim that they are lying.
- woahAcademia 6y agoFirst time on HN? There are like 2 new Apple security or privacy issues every week. You know about PRISM/edward snowden? You can verify all of this with almost no effort. Any links I post you won't believe. It's up to you.
- zepto 6y agoNot one of those security or privacy issues substantiates that Apple has a hidden agenda to collect data on you. They do substantiate that Apple has a long way to go in terms of technically solving privacy problems. Yes, the NSA has an agenda to track you.
- woahAcademia 6y agoAhh my book doesn't actually make you a millionaire in a day,but that's just because I failed technically. Anyway- "Buy my book, make 1 million dollars in a day". It's not a hidden agenda, I just suck.
- zepto 6y agoApple is actually checking certificates. That is the agenda. Claiming they are doing more requires evidence.
- acdha 6y agoYou must be new yourself not to have seen how quickly those claims are debunked or shown to be far less exciting than claimed. For example, you’re repeating Greenwald’s misunderstanding of the PRISM report seemingly unaware of the last decade of discussion.
