I read this and thought you were referring to Neil Postman. I've read some of his books - Amusing ourselves to death and Technopoly - which I would recommend to anyone. The first is regarding the effect different mediums of communication have on the messages we transmit in them. How do the messages you transmit with say smoke-signal, writing and tv differ? The second talks about technology for technology sake, rather than a means to an end. Increasingly relevant today.
