Does this make any sense for 1978?
- widforss 6y agoASCII was released in 1963.
- yetihehe 6y agoDoes this make sense? Yes. ASCII was invented in 1960 and already updated in 1968 and 1977. Is it really true? No[0]. [0] https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/alt.fan.douglas-adams/595nPukE-Jo/koaAJ3tPBtEJ https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/alt.fan.douglas-adams/...
- nitrogen 6y agoASCII originated in 1963: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII It looks like the star notation for "zero or more" could originate in 1951 as the Kleene Star: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_expression#CITEREFKleene1951 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_expression#CITEREFKl... The wildcard use of the asterisk is at least as old as Unix, so probably pre-1970, but I can't find a reference in the time I am willing to spend.
- rozab 6y agoThe regex thing doesn't make any sense as the asterisk isn't even a wildcard. I think the only system he's likely to have used at that time which used the asterisk as a wildcard is CP/M. It was definitely less ubiquitous as it is today.
