0. ssh/d so i can transfer files like a human being, not an animal.
- wil421 6y agoStarting with 0 and transferring files via ssh means you are a special kind of animal.
- yjftsjthsd-h 6y agoI mean, we're literally on Hacker News.
- chokeartist 6y agoCircle is not complete until I see a suggestion on how you can replace iCloud with mashup scripting of sftp/rsync and cronjobs.
- fartcannon 6y agoThose can't replace iCloud because they are free. Write the sftp/rsync script and then throw money in the garbage to accurately replace iCloud.
- Fnoord 6y agos/iCloud/Dropbox/g Here on HN, mentioning Dropbox makes the circle complete.
- pessimizer 6y agoNo, the circle is not complete until an article is posted about how a 15 year old cobbled together a website/app combo that did it automatically and grew to a few million users overnight; Apple hired the kid, killed the app, and wrote a new layer of signed security into iOS that would prevent anything like that from working again; and that layer was responsible for the last iCloud outage because somebody at Apple accidentally let a certificate expire.
- snazz 6y agoDoes that compete at all speed-wise with just plugging it into your computer via USB? I guess your local network should be fairly fast, but I would think that USB would still be faster (not to mention that you wouldn't need to find the right file from the terminal).
- saagarjha 6y ago> plugging it into your computer via USB wires
- gcblkjaidfj 6y ago>wires and dongles. It's IOS device after all.
- angry_octet 6y agoCopying files over USB is ludicrously slow and requires cross-device trust and exposure to dirty USB. Let's not deceive ourselves: Apple deliberately cripples standardised data exchange mechanisms to push iCloud and aht Apple ecosystem.
- nerdite 6y agoThe files app on ios works with smb. . . it's not sftp but it works.
- shmoogy 6y agoYou might like the Shellfish app
- daniellarusso 6y agoHow do you browse smb shares?
- captn3m0 6y agoEven with SMB, it is very painful to use - you can't create bookmarks and if a connectivity test fails to the server - it gets removed from the list and you have to add it back again. Not sure but I think moving files within the same share also takes a round-trip to the iPhone.
- rorykoehler 6y agoI'm still not sure why we didn't get a normal file browser from the start. It is a solved problem and everything rolled out for ios has been a regression.
- gcblkjaidfj 6y ago> thread about not transferring files like an animal > suggests smb :/
- anderspitman 6y agoWhat sorts of files are you transferring? For things like PDFs or videos I normally use something like https://file.pizza https://file.pizza.
- bobbean 6y agoThat's an awesome thanks for mentioning it.
- angry_octet 6y agoIs there some trick to make file.pizza work? I'm leaving the tab open and trying on various different devices, but it just stays at Peers: 0 and nothing downloads.
- anderspitman 6y agoI would guess your network is blocking WebRTC. Are you at work?
- angry_octet 6y agoWhile I do have WebRTC blocking on this computer, I tried sharing from other devices and networks too, chrome and firefox and mobile versions. According to [1]&[2] WebRTC UDP and TCP are enabled, relay/reflexive/host connectivity. - f1refly 6y agossh is fine, but you could also use syncthing which is about 500% more user friendly
- Wowfunhappy 6y agoNot on iOS you can’t. :(
