Ask HN: What are your favorite roguelike games?
I've enjoyed playing roguelike games in the childhood some 20 years ago but haven't played them lately to know much of recent ones but what are your favorite roguelike games in the past 20 years?
- athielking 6y agoI just picked up Hades on steam and am really enjoying it.
- e1g 6y agoWhile "favorite" is by definition subjective, Hades is objectively the most "polished" rougelike ever released, and from masters of this craft. Absolute gem, highly recommended.
- 1_player 6y agoNot technically a roguelike. In any case, it looks really good and polished, though definitely not my cup of tea, there's too much going on on the screen and I've never been a fan of Supergiant Games game design, but that's a totally subjective opinion.
- Nimrod0901 6y agoSlay the Spire, but it is somewhat a roguelite game?
- megasquid 6y agoRisk of rain 2
- ido 6y agoDepending on your definition, Jupiter Hell is a good traditional roguelike. Dwarf Fortress is also often considered one though the gameplay is quite different from most roguelikes.
- Octopodes 6y agoAdventure mode in DF is definitely close, in case you're only familiar with fortress mode.
- dhanvanthri 6y agoCataclysm DDA is probably my favourite, but I don't like playing more than a single character at a time, and when I get too far into the endgame, I get bored with it, I usually just kill my character in some ludicrous/stupid way. That's usually when I play Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. I think the recent versions are all garbage (I guess there's some pitfalls to democratized game-development), I play strictly version 23.0. Between these two games, all my of roguelike itches are scratched. I'd say CDDA is sort of like single-player only Dwarf Fortress, and DCSS is Rogue/Angband distilled. FTL is an INCREDIBLE game, but I've given it up cause it's proprietary software. I also played some Tales of Maj'Eyal, but imo it's too combat focused for what RP elements are in it. I've beaten all of these games, and DCSS around 20 times. I recommend them all thoroughly. Honorable Mentions: 1) Shattered PD for mobile 2) Slay the Spire
- kevingranade 6y agoThe climb to mid game is definitely the part of the game that works the best, I have some plans for a more extensive endgame, but it's going to be a while.
- therm0 6y agodungeons of dredmor
- chachachoney 6y agoDungeon Crawl Stone Soup and Caves of Qud.
- postpawl 6y agoUndermine
- 1_player 6y agoHappy to see many comments about Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. Start here: http://ultraviolent4.com/guide.html http://ultraviolent4.com/guide.html - Play or spectate a game here: https://crawl.develz.org/play.htm https://crawl.develz.org/play.htm Mine are of course DCSS, Cataclysm: DDA, FTL, DoomRL. If we're including roguelites: Risk of Rain 2, Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon, Binding of Isaac. Not a fan of: Caves of Qud, Spelunky, Nethack.
- ccapo 6y ago- Jauntropper: Mission Thunderbolt, and the sequel Mission Firestorm - Pixel Dungeon - NetHack - Moria - Rogue - Games made for the annual 7DRL challenge
- deleted 6y ago[deleted]
- b-g-m 6y agoAncient Domains of Mystery (ADOM)
- killtimeatwork 6y agoBinding of Isaac: Rebirth. Pretty much the only video game I've played a lot of (200+ hours at this point) since I started working 15 years ago.
- tmearnest 6y agoIf you’re a fan of twin stick shooters and gratuitous yet quirky violence, I suggest Streets of Rogue. Maps are random and procedurally generated and items and progress are lost when you die, but you get to keep anything you unlocked.
- dyingkneepad 6y agoI can't believe nobody said Rogue Legacy yet. This game is amazing and they are producing Rogue Legacy 2 right now. It gets even better once you realize there are speedrunners who are able to beat the game in 5 minutes. Watch and try to copy them lol. I also remember enjoying that Roguelike game that is a sequel to Final Fantasy X-2. I know it's not FF X-3, the name is something else, but I can't google it now.
- lukaszkups 6y agoPC/console: Risk of Rain Mobile: Archero, MageHero
