So what was the faulty resistors value?

  Tail of the article shows 396 ohms rather than 50 ohms.

  She says she measured it at 394 ohms. The closest standard value is 390ohms. I wonder where else that's used on the board, and if this is a pick and place machine error.

    Yep, could be. Could also be some BOM error in their part library if that problem is present on every board of a certain revision.
