That was a blast from the past. I can’t remember exactly but I think I went Frontpage -> Dreamweaver -> Notepad++ -> Sublime -> VSCode and obviously the other tooling only grew to be more complex (whilst improving sanity). I’m not sure I long for the days of plesk + cPanel etc but I hadn’t thought of all of that nonsense for years. A very different time!
- berkut 6y agoYeah, for me it was HoTMetaL Pro (1994), then moved to Frontpage in 1996 and Dreamweaver in 1998...
- Moru 6y agoFor me it was an Atari Falcon030 with some text editor I can't remember the name of open in one window, and the browser (CAB?) open in another window. When I saved the editor, the browser updated the view without me having to switch windows. Very handy for tweaking. I was forced to use Frontpage a few times but it was so cumbersome when you were used to programming so I gave up fast and went back to text editors. PSPad and Netbeans lately.
- webmobdev 6y agoFor me it was Netscape Navigator -> Frontpage Express (?) / Frontpage -> Dreamweaver. Firebug was also an awesome tool.
- nunodonato 6y agoyou mean Netscape Composer? :)
- webmobdev 6y agoYeah, that's the one!
- mjhagen 6y agoI went (iirc): BBEdit -> Netscape -> Claris Home Page -> PageMill -> NetObjects Fusion -> HomeSite -> ColdFusion Studio -> Coda -> Sublime Text. I'm thinking of trying Panic's Nova next, but I'm really invested in ST.
- LukeBMM 6y agoI really want to buy Nova out of love for Panic, but realistically probably won't use it much. I think my path was more like... GoLive Cyberstudio -> BBEdit -> Dreamweaver -> BBEdit -> TextMate -> BBEdit -> Coda -> BBEdit -> Sublime Text -> BBEdit -> Atom -> BBEdit -> VS Code -> BBEdit I keep trying to change but BBEdit still, to this very day, keeps doing exactly what I want. So I just keep coming back to it.
- mjhagen 6y agoIn my first edit I had a couple more BBEdits in there. Especially in the very early days it was the aspirational programmer’s editor.
- mxuribe 6y agoFor me it was FrontPage -> Dreamweaver -> Notepad++ -> Spend a month or so dabbling with full IDEs (like netbeans, eclipse, VSCode, etc.) -> Go back to notepad++ -> And recently trying Geany (for cross-platform convenience). My favorite back in the day was dreamweaver (warts and all)...but we're talking circa 2000 ~ 2005. Ah, those were the days! :-)
