The difference is that a lot of software is forever unfinished. I was about to say "if you work on a game, or a desktop app maybe" but even that is not true anymore. Games are patched almost weekly nowadays. This advice can absolutely be applied to making a movie, writing a book, painting a picture, etc, but not to software.
