What percentage of HN users are “ghost banned”?
I use two accounts on HN because I have two devices (like any normal person). After a year I just noticed that my "mobile" account has been ghost banned and for the last year I was essentially just talking to myself.
If you comment or post to HN are you ghost banned? My guess would be that A LOT of people here are in the same boat.
It would be a lot nicer of HN to just ban your IP or at least let the user know.

- mtmail 6y agoIn your account setting you can set showdead=yes. It's not as many as you probably think. Email the moderators (link is in the footer). Other users can also click 'vouch' on comments, I've done that a couple of times. If comments are short or non-substantial others tend to ignore them. And I don't know how many readers have showdead=yes switched on.
- kylebenzle 6y agoThank you! I think that is a perfect solution actually to "problem posters". Maybe HN ain't so bad after all :)
- uberman 6y agoThis is also sometimes called "hell-banned" or "shadow-banned" if you wanted to search for more info or posts on the topic.

- kazinator 6y ago> I use two accounts on HN because I have two devices That does not in any way follow, and makes no sense. You can log in the same HN account from multiple browsers/devices, so you can be you wherever you happen to be coming from. You know, like a normal person. You know, like with gmail or any number of other online services ... with only rare exceptions such as Line, which has device-tied profiles.
- mod 6y agoYou can email dang (the admin) and let him know you promise to behave in the future and he'll lift your ban. I've seen him make the offer dozens of times in threads. Then maybe freshen up on the rules or whatever. I do not think many people are shadowbanned. Most people comment in a way that doesn't violate the commenting guidelines.
