Yeah so far the performance is very close to my 10 core iMac Pro I use for day to day development. This is on a MacBook Air with no fan, and so far I haven't felt the machine even get warm even when compiling _and_ also running tests or importing data in other processes.
This is when running a decently sized Rails monolith w/ PostgreSQL & Redis, so a fairly typical modern Rails setup.
It's seriously impressive.
- yagya 6y agoOnce I get mine, I plan on building AOSP and seeing what limits I can push the hardware to.
- mekster 6y agoDoes it mean you can no longer easily tell if a process has gone crazy and takes high CPU usage without a fan and you also can't even feel the slow down.
- brianpan 6y agoTotally broke my workflow: https://xkcd.com/1172/ https://xkcd.com/1172/
- ogre_codes 6y agoI was wondering something similar. VSCode tends to fly off the handle every once in a while and the only way I notice currently is a subtle lagging and the fan spinning up. Though recently I switched back to VIM so perhaps this won't be an issue anymore.
- bartvk 6y agoThat is true in many situations, like a remote server. That's why we have top on the commandline, or iStat Menus. But I'm not sure if iStat Menus actually works on the new machines. https://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/ https://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
- mekster 6y agoThose are passive solutions. You'd be looking at them after you realize something doesn't look right. iStat or similar can do a notification if a process is taking high CPU usage for a while. Servers have their own solutions like monitoring daemons that sends out an alert if CPU usage had been too high for a while.
- divbzero 6y agoJust wait, we’ll soon have an app for that — the equivalent of fake engine sound for EVs.
- ngcc_hk 6y agoHaha!!! Sorry but is this crazy to need the fan to sense the performance!
- panda88888 6y agoI like the idea. An app that roars louder the higher the cpu load.
- growse 6y agoNullsoft (remember them?) had 'beep' which was always a joy to run. https://www.1014.org/code/nullsoft/nbeep/ https://www.1014.org/code/nullsoft/nbeep/
- panda88888 6y agoOf Winamp fame? Of course!
- talmr 6y agoNice! Are you using x code as well? I’m in a similar boat as you - running bunch of node services, pg, etc. but I’m also developing for iOS. Xcode kills my current MacBook because I’m constantly rebuilding.
- vishnugupta 6y agoWould you mind sharing the RAM size on iMac Pro? I'm seriously considering buying Mac mini however its max 16GB of RAM is putting me off; fwiw I'm currently on MacBook Pro 2018 (2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4). So any feedback around memory usage/size is very welcome! Thanks!
