Huh. I have two Kobos, a Kobo Clara HD and an older Kobo Glo HD from 2016, and I've never had any trouble sideloading epubs using Calibre. Perhaps the quality is lower, but I've certainly never noticed, compared with the books I've bought directly from Kobo.
