Executives in big company cutting costs for whatever is not making immediate profit. One of those moments when you come to understand how out of touch they are with their audience. Gamers are nostalgic breed and PS1/2/3 made many childhood memories. Nintendo knows to capitalize on their history far better than Sony or Microsoft.
- cbsmith 6y agoIt depends on what you mean by "out of touch they are their audience". They're pretty in touch with how the money is being spent.
- mulmen 6y agoSure, right now. But do they know why? Will their customers still be around for the PS6? Your comment is so shortsighted I can't tell if it is a parody.
- uCantCauseUCant 6y agoA locust is in touch with nature - but is it really in a sustainable relationship with nature. Local, spiking maxima, do not mean you are laying down long-term growth foundations, from which new endeavours can spearhead
- blackoil 6y agoOr they can go 'Disney' and really cash on nostalgia. You need not need keep everything alive, just smartly use Vault and Remakes.
- nix23 6y ago>Nintendo knows to capitalize on their history far better than Sony or Microsoft. Exactly, it's because Nintendo is a Toy-maker (in a good sense), but Microsoft and Sony are Technology Corporations, just look at that PlayStation Classic BS, they cannot even copy Nintendo.
- _the_inflator 6y agoExactly, and you could also add to this the current "trend" of Age of Empires, Warcraft, Command and Conquer.
- bayindirh 6y agoDo not forget Starcraft. :D
- Narann 6y ago> Nintendo knows to capitalize on their history far better than Sony or Microsoft. Compared to Nintendo, Microsoft have no gaming history and Sony is not that better. Nintendo is the oldest of them, with a huge IP for pre-Playstation area (NES, SNES, GB, GBC, etc). Nintendo is the first to had the opportunity to provide its old games to its console (Wii virtual console). This implies it is the first to have to deal with retro gaming emulation from a financial standpoint. Nintendo platforms tends to be the most emulated ones with very good emulation. Also dev community tends to focus on Nintendo emulator far more. Neither Sony or MS had those problems. I suspect things are moving slightly for the Playstation world, but even with that Sony don't have a such big IP they can control and distribute them-self.
- Izkata 6y agoEven before the virtual console, Nintendo made it a point on its handhelds that every generation could play the whole catalogue of one generation previous. Until the Switch at least, though that's not a pure handheld.
- jmiskovic 6y agoThe MS DOS and Windows platform hosted enormous amount of gaming history. It doesn't go back as far as Nintendo and they have no control over IP (due to open-garden nature of those OS-es), but the volume of games is huge. That's just a nitpick about first sentence, I agree with the rest of your post.
