Service and Devotion: The enduring songcraft of Dolly Parton
- mastazi 6y agoIf anyone is looking for a really good pop music-related podcast, "Strong Songs"[1] released at least one episode [2] about Dolly Parton, the episode is very well made just like all other episodes I've listened to, and and I highly suggest that podcast to anyone interested in music. - acheron 6y agoScanning through the list of episodes now, and it looks promising. I’ll definitely try it out, thanks for the link!
- soneca 6y agoI would also recommend this podcast series (9 episodes) dedicated to Dolly Parton: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/dolly-partons-america https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/dolly-partons-america It’s by Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad. It is fascinating, even to me, that knew next to nothing about Dolly Parton. I listened to the whole series and came out with great admiration for her.
- jimmySixDOF 6y agoAn interesting tie in point is that Jad's father is a doctor at Vanderbilt University who treated Dolly after a car accident. The father and Dolly developed a relationship sharing stories of how they both grew up poor etc and their conversations on health science led to her $1M donation to help early Covid research (SARS-1). Dolly Parton is the kind of person who can restore your faith in humanity and its great the podcast interviews are such a success.
- jimmySixDOF 6y ago(Correction) The research grant was for COVID-19 not for the first Sars virus. But she did meet the Doctor from Vanderbilt back in 2013.
- thomasfl 6y agoDolly Parton is fascinating. Recent years I have stopped writing open source software, like mye command line filewatcher, and taken up song writing. It is a hard challenge to find an audience, atune to their taste, and produce some original songs. While I like to sit by the piano or play the guitar, my main instrument is the iPad. After the kids have gone to sleep, I play garageband with headphones.
- vonseel 6y agoStarting to wonder why I've seen at least 3, maybe 4, unrelated things about Dolly Parton today. Including covers on Youtube and an article about her investment in coronavirus research.
- curiousgal 6y agoHonestly I see it as a symptom of America's obsession with "the one true saving hero". Hear me out, judging by the internet, American people seem to always need someone to put on a pedestal; Mueller, Sanders, Fauci, AoC, Dolly Parton, I am not eloquent enough to explain it but it seems to me that people are always looking for someone to worship and hold as their saving grace where in fact, the issues they're facing are complicated and no single hero is going to solve them. I don't know, has anyone else noticed this?
- joubert 6y agoHero worship is an ancient human characteristic. Perhaps American culture amps it up (to wit: superheroes), but methinks the psychological allure runs deep. I, for one, have always been amused at the level of attention bestowed upon the Windsors. :-)
- situationista 6y agoInteresting to note that back in April, when COVID-19 had only just been declared a pandemic, Dolly Parton donated $1m to research into a vaccine. That research effort eventually became the Moderna vaccine.
