Apple’s M1 MacBook Pro is powerful, but the battery life will blow you away
- aledthemathguy 6y ago"I personally tested the 13” M1 MacBook Pro and after extensive testing, it’s clear that this machine eclipses some of the most powerful Mac portables ever made in performance while simultaneously delivering 2x-3x the battery life at a minimum."
- achow 6y agoSuper interesting part for me was that legacy apps (apps not rewritten for M1 chip) would run just as fast as they on Intel Macs. But the real nut of it is that it has managed to make a chip so powerful that it can take the approximate 26% hit (see the following charts) in raw power to translate apps and still make them run just as fast if not faster than MacBooks with Intel processors.
- nynx 6y agoI think about unified memory a lot. CPUs are extremely powerful these days but are often hindered by memory latency (hence growing cache sizes). Co-locating memory on the cpu die, maybe even stacking it, would go a long way to improving performance here.
- gvb 6y agoThe M1 has 16GB of DRAM as part of the die. Edit: My bad, it is in the package but not on the die. https://images.anandtech.com/doci/16226/2020-11-10%2019_08_48.jpg https://images.anandtech.com/doci/16226/2020-11-10%2019_08_4...
- phjesusthatguy3 6y agoI'm looking forward to these machines coming on the second-hand market. I have no interest in running MacOS but (hopefully) it will be a great platform for running Debian.
- nunez 6y agoThe M1 MacBook _Air_ compiles WebKit as quickly as the i7 2020 MacBook _Pro_ while only using 9% of its battery life. Absolutely insane.
- tibbydudeza 6y agoNow this is impressive .... now I wish Microsoft ported Windows to it :(.
