Ask HN: What is Linux story on ARM macbooks
With macbooks being several orders faster than any other laptop it may not be that bad of a Idea to run Linux on MacBooks. How good can ARM MacBooks run Linux?
- cameron_b 6y agoThe hardware security features are currently preventing that from happening. I would also like to see that work, but I’m starting to think that we need to regard Apple on Arm as a lift for the technology overall but not necessarily a win for the community

- akmittal 6y agoA lot of benchmark claimed M1 is fastest laptop chip https://www.anandtech.com/show/16226/apple-silicon-m1-a14-deep-dive/3 https://www.anandtech.com/show/16226/apple-silicon-m1-a14-de...
- jiveturkey 6y agoThat article is about A14. It's projecting what things will kind of look like for M1. The top spec MBP runs rings around M1. As well, M1 limited to a paltry 16GB RAM vs 64GB RAM for the MBP 16. Even though the M1 is much faster than others in its class, it might touch 2x performance. Quite good, but not an order of magnitude and certainly not several orders!
- wmf 6y agoThere are no drivers and no documentation that would make it easy to write drivers. The checkra1n jailbreaking team is planning to port Linux but "it'll take a while to bear its fruits". https://www.realworldtech.com/forum/?threadid=196533&curpostid=196580 https://www.realworldtech.com/forum/?threadid=196533&curpost...
