Ask HN: Is it ok for me to clone your software and sell it as my own?
- draw_down 6y agoI dunno, ask Instagram
- gostsamo 6y agoWhat is the license?
- IndySun 6y agoFor this hypothetical question assume the license is irrelevant. (Assume the most legal tight license known) But an answer referencing a license you would not break to clone/sell would make an interesting point.
- gostsamo 6y agoThen it is quite illegal. The creator of the software has copyright over their work unless they license it under a permissive license.
- IndySun 6y agobased on one reply (very gratefully received), it is not ok to clone, reverse engineer, copyrighted software, then resell it (I've seen as much written into music sound libraries). But a grey area where other copyrighted material is cloned and re-sold. This is a fascinatingly dark topic. I did not know a whole generation and more of people resented paying for certain items so strongly, especially those items that can be taken in ways that no one sees. This is not physically walking into a store and walking out with what you want, it's like being invisible and taking what you want, from wherever you can take. I can't help but think that if the invisibility were to be removed it wouldn't happen so freely. Moreover, at the same time, not just take, but ascertain some kind of 'right' to ignore ownership - copyright appears to exist for some things and not others, and apparently at the individuals discretion.
