Ask HN: Photogrammatry Software
A few months ago there were two projects that I've not been able to find for the life of me - one from google, one elsewhere, that built a 3d model from a camera/phone of say, a room or house.
I'm now trying to find any software - app, applications etc that I could use, preferably opensource, that takes video/images of a room/house and builds a 3d model of the layout.
Eg:
1) Take 1000(?) photos or a video of home
2) upload photos into software
3) Magic ensues and we have a 3d model
or:
1) Take live video and as you video , a model builds on the PC/Phone

- beatthatflight 6y agoI've spent the last two hours playing with a few but most seem to crash or fail silently, aren't supported any more, or are Mac/iOS only. I was remembering the two mentioned above (one by google, can't remember the other but it was epic). Thanks, I'll keep working through the list.
- beatthatflight 6y agoI've found the google one - NeRF - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24071787 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24071787 - but sigh, not the other one :/
- sigmaprimus 6y agoMeshroom seems to be the most popular but like you said it is a tough one to get working. Seems to require cuda cores which I believe are in nvidia GPUs, probably uses similar routines as Tensorflow for image processing. There is a commercial tool called "Reality Capture" that probably would work but at 15k euros for a lifetime or 750 euros for a month it might be too pricey for you. Here is a GitHub search link that might help You out. https://github.com/topics/photogrammetry https://github.com/topics/photogrammetry Good luck with your search. It looks like there is room to develop some tools for this niche if anyone is looking for a new project.
- junon 6y ago- Meshroom - Reality capture - Metashape Meshroom is open source, and tends to be slower and have worse results. But it's free! Reality Capture is the opposite. Apparently (haven't tried myself) the best in the industry, but insanely expensive (subscription-based only AFAIU). Metashape Pro is my go-to. The demo is very liberal and it's quick enough and accurate enough for what I need to do. You need a LOT of ram (64 gigs is about the minimum) and the more CUDA cores the better. If you don't have a dedicated graphics card, you can forget about doing any sort of remotely complex scan within 24 hours (e.g. a macbook). This applies to any PG software.
- beatthatflight 6y agoHmm. Yes, I've been trying Meshroom this arvo. Keep getting errors about bounding box being too small :/
- junon 6y agoSeriously, give metashape a try. I've never had any issues with it that couldn't be explained by poor photo inputs.
- beatthatflight 6y agothere's also colab notebooks with meshroom but they're failing to run too. Sigh. I'll keep at it.
