To add a little context, this was during a time when the Republican party supported policies that today we typically expect the Democratic party to support and vice versa.
- whb07 6y agoThis is wrong. The party of Lincoln and emancipation is the Republican party. The party of segregation and Jim Crow is that of the Democrats.

- chordalkeyboard 6y agoperhaps they are pushing back on what the gp considers people to "typically believe"
- whb07 6y agoI actually didn’t. GP insinuates that there’s been a flip of policies between parties when that’s not the case. The same party that wanted to keep slavery in the south is the very same party of today spouting racist ideology.
- March_f6 6y agoI think you misunderstood my comment William. 1876 was a time when the Republican party generally wanted a large federal government (as opposed to a smaller government favored by Democrats) and you can look at the policies they supported during this time to verify this. It's not controversial, it's historical.
