Are there any engineers here who can comment on the safety of this? I've always wanted to tackle something like this, but I'd be afraid of creating a radiation leak. I know it's realtively mundane, but I'd like to avoid cataracts and/or sterility if possible. My impression was that holes in the chassis were a no-no, which would explain why all microwaves have membrane keypads.
- mankyd 6y agoThe electronics aren't in the radiation zone. Go to town on them. Just watch out for the super powerful transformer that makes the microwave actually work. This project is mostly about simply replacing the keypad, not the controller itself. You can also make bigger holes than you would expect and still be safe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bXhsUs-ohw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bXhsUs-ohw
- userbinator 6y agoThe radiation is contained inside the cooking area. The magnetron is powered by 4kV at enough current to kill you, so do be careful around that and the rest of the HV circuitry (older models have a huge transformer, newer ones use a tiny one with inverter electronics.)
