Stop Emailing Like a Rube
- francis-io 6y agoThe tone is a bit silly, but I do agree that getting a personal domain is a good idea. I've had one for business for a while now, and just got a new "personal one". I guess I now need to recreate all the accounts I care about using this new address. I'm assuming, for the most part, sites don't have the desire to change my email address as a username.
- jevgeni 6y agoStop with the modal newsletter pestering, Jeffrey, and maybe I’ll read your article.
- Austin_Conlon 6y agoTo what extent does this apply to iCloud mail?
- corty 6y agoTo the full extent? I would even go so far to not take your technical skills seriously for many jobs if you can't even admin a small VM for your private email. Companies with this lack of skill are even worse, don't care about their or their customers' privacy and lack the skills...
- rachelbythebay 6y agoI ran my own mail servers for 30 years. I punted on this earlier this year. Best to not take folks like me seriously, then.
- dgeiser13 6y agoWhen you say punted do you mean you stopped running your own mail servers?
- rachelbythebay 6y agoYes. Everything is hosted now.
- lokedhs 6y agoWhere are you hosting it? I'm looking for a good solution to move my domain off of Google Apps. I haven't really found a good alternative. I was looking at Protonmail until I noticed just how much money they charge per account.
- rachelbythebay 6y agoTry Fastmail. Their mail service just works.
- hh3k0 6y ago> Receiving email at your own domain is table stakes for adulting online […] Thanks but I won't read the rest.
- bradknowles 6y agoI was the co-author of the USENIX booklet on postmaster duties. I ran the mail servers for AOL in the mid-90s. I’ve done that same job for plenty of other places. It’s hard work to do it right. It’s hard enough to do this job right, even when you have all the money and equipment that you could potentially do it right. It’s almost impossible to do this job right when you’re paying for everything out of your own pocket. That’s why I’ve outsourced the e-mail administration for my vanity domain since 1995.
