Trump is a symptom of the problem; the divide was happening before he came onto the scene. The actual problem needs to be resolved before it becomes a bigger problem. Right now in my point of view identity politics has created a political schism that's widening. What's the status quo? Call everyone a racist white supremacist? That's going to increase the divide more.
