The top menu bar is also hidden when apps go full screen.
I think the only alternative is to hold down option key when expanding the window.
- fimdomeio 6y agoSince that feature was introduced I think I only ever used it by mistake. I think it would make a lot more sense if pressing alt would allow for fullscreen and normal click would be maximize.
- zalthor 6y agoIf you double click the top bar (or use one of the many window management tools), you can maximize the window without going full screen.
- brundolf 6y agoSave yourself the headache, use a third-party window manager. I've been using this one for six years with no complaints: https://folivora.ai/ https://folivora.ai/ Beyond giving you basics like Windows-style "snapping", it's highly customizable with keyboard and even trackpad and touch bar shortcuts
- boringg 6y agohttps://github.com/eczarny/spectacle https://github.com/eczarny/spectacle Great for short cuts to resizing your screens better then the OS Version I was using before.
- KORraN 6y agoSpectacle is no longer maintained (it may matter with Big Sur release). Rectangle is based on Spectacle and is actively developed: https://github.com/rxhanson/Rectangle https://github.com/rxhanson/Rectangle
- boringg 6y agoAhh thanks. While it may no longer be maintained it still works perfectly. Fingers crossed it keeps going that way or will get rectangle.
- geoelectric 6y agoHold down opt when you click the maximize button and it'll do what you want instead, and resize to cover all the area between dock and menu. Assuming you have "zoom" set in System Preferences | Dock, double-clicking the title bar does that too, I believe.
- saagarjha 6y ago> resize to cover all the area between dock and menu That is usually not what people want; they want it to cover the screen.
- geoelectric 6y agoWhat I'm describing as the "opt" behavior is the classic maximizing behavior on both Mac and Windows (except Windows doesn't have a top bar). If you don't hide the dock/start bar it maxes to its limit, if you hide it goes to the bottom. Maybe it was unclear when I didn't mention it'll max side to side too if the bar is on the bottom. If bar is on the side it'll leave a gutter on the side. TL;DR it's a normal maximize--doesn't cover the doc or menu bar and you can float windows in front of it since it's not full screen mode.
- saagarjha 6y agoI just did that on the Safari window I was using to type the comment and it just went tall. That is not what I would call "maximize".
- harrygeez 6y agoI can't believe they're still not giving us an option to toggle this behavior. This is the biggest mistake in macOS.
