Play Store identified as main distribution vector for most Android malware
- tokai 6y agoSo all the deficiencies of a walled garden, without any of the benefits.
- Arnt 6y agoRead the article. "The Play market is the main app distribution vector responsible for 87% of all installs and 67% of unwanted installs. However, its VDR is only 0.6%, better than all other large distribution vectors. Thus, the Play market defenses against unwanted apps work, but still significant amounts of unwanted apps are able to bypass them, making it the main distribution vector for unwanted apps. Among the remaining installs, alternative markets are the largest, being responsible for 5.7% of all installs and 10.4% of unwanted installs. However, on average they are five times riskier (3.2% VDR) than the Play market (0.6%). Download risk highly varies among alternative markets. Some like Amazon’s and Vivo’s are almost as safe as the Play market, but users of other top alternative markets have up to 19 times higher probability of encountering an unwanted app." Note that second-to-last sentence. The walled garden beats the average competitor by a factor of five, and it beats even the two best competitors.
- p410n3 6y agoIn other News: Play Store identified as main distribution vector for most Android Software OFCOURSE most malware comes from the Play Store since thats what 90%+ of people exclusively use to get ANY software on their phones.
- physicsguy 6y agoThis sort of thing is the reasons I don't think the walled garden of the iOS App Store is anywhere near as much of a problem as people say it is on here.
