I'll never understand the fantasies about armed bands roaming the suburbs. Must come from tv shows and video games, because there's never been an actual natural disaster in the US where that sort of behavior was wide spread. And we've had a lot of natural disasters
- anonymousse1234 6y agoDid you pay attention to the news for the last few months? There are roaming bandits in many places of the world including streets of US disguised as "peaceful protesters".
- White_Wolf 6y ago"Let's go raid the honey farm" would be said. It's fairly energy dense, antiseptic and perfect for long term storage.
- moduspol 6y agoYou don't need a raid if you have guns and they don't. You probably don't even have to do any shooting. You might just be hungry, or in a group with others who are hungry, and heard there was a farm in a general area.
- throwawaygh 6y agoI guess my point was more that disasters happen all the time and I can't remember the last time I heard about a farm being raided.
- moduspol 6y agoIf you're only concerned about the disasters that happen all the time, then you're not in the same mindset as your typical prepper.
- hannasanarion 6y agoThe point is that the idea that disasters are immediately followed by violent banditry is entirely a fabrication of hollywood. In real life, when disaster strikes people band together. Humans are fundamentally social animals, we have been for our entire 150,000 year history. Our lizard-brain instinct is to seek help and help others.
- moduspol 6y agoWe are also quite tribal, and there are numerous instances throughout that history of an "us vs. them" mentality causing people to do terrible things. I don't expect roving gangs. I do expect people to be coerced into handing over resources by other people who think they're helping others and/or serving a greater good.
- chmod600 6y agoNatural disasters are not so bad. Historically-speaking, artificial disasters are much more worrisome. The main thing that protects your farm is simply distance. Nobody in a city knows how to travel by foot or navigate.
- rhino369 6y agoThe media reports during Katrina probably contributed to this fear. Even today, I'm sure most people believe it was lawless anarchy and that the superdome turned into a massive gang rape. That was a gross exaggeration.
- mrexroad 6y agoWell... that may depend on one’s proximity to The Hundred Acre Wood or other natural habitats of Heffalumps and Woozles.
- krimi 6y ago> I'll never understand the fantasies about armed bands roaming the suburbs. I wonder how much of it is rooted in racism and irrational fear of "urban gangs". Where I am in europe it seems like the extreme right likes to entertain societal collapse fantasies using the suburban immigrant delinquents as threir main focus point. No idea how that translates in the US though
