It's part of Valve's hedge against Windows. Basically, Valve is making sure they (and no other developer or publisher) end up in an 'Epic vs {Apple,Google}' situation.
Valve: invest in technologies that weaken their dependency on third parties.
Epic: sue the third parties they depend on and complain about them loudly on Twitter.
