The Last Days of Mankind
- billfruit 6y agoHow does it compare with Robert Musil's "Man without qualities"? Both seems to be somewhat on related topics..
- earthscienceman 6y agoDoes anyone have this in PDF form?
- supernova87a 6y agoHmm, probably gonna need a Cliff Notes version of it, or funny excerpts quoted, before diving into read a 42 act play...
- dash2 6y agoI'll give you my favourite quote: Ich höre Geräusche, die Andere nicht hören, und sie stören mir die Musik der Sphären - die Andere auch nicht hören. I hear noises which others don't hear, and they distract me from the music of the spheres - which others also don't hear. That is Kraus' alter ego speaking, in the context of the Great War and jingoism in Austria-Hungary, which the play satirizes. If you want an intro, Clive James has an essay in Cultural Amnesia, which is a great book in its own right.
- cafard 6y agoUpvoted for the mention of Cultural Amnesia. Jonathan Franzen brought out The Kraus Project in 2013; I haven't read any of it, unless an excerpt from the introduction in a book review.
- kratom_sandwich 6y agoQuick background: "Die letzten Tage der Menschheit" is a collection of scenes dealing with WW1 which are not meant to be seen as one coherent play or performed at once. Usually, theatre companies select a subset of scenes to perform.
