Turning a floppy disk in to a Starship (2013)
- lisper 6y agoMore accurate headline: turning a floppy disk into a (somewhat cheesy) model of the USS Enterprise. [UPDATE:] More like the USS Discovery. But whatever.
- dvtrn 6y agoThat wide secondary hull has very strong Discovery vibes to me, but the saucer section is peak Enterprise (I’m leaning refit/TMP with oversized impulse systems, what about you?)
- lisper 6y agoFixed.
- app4soft 6y agoAll them classified as Starship Enterprise[0]: > Three decades later, the McQuarrie design for the Enterprise was adopted as the basis for the design of the USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery, a 2017 series that takes place ten years earlier than the original Star Trek. - app4soft 6y agoI may agree on "in to"/"into", but NOT on "(somewhat cheesy) model of the USS Enterprise". From Wikipedia[0]: > Enterprise or USS Enterprise (often referred to as the "Starship Enterprise") is the name of several fictional spacecraft, some of which are the main craft and setting for various television series and films in the Star Trek science fiction franchise. BTW, Original title should not be corrected as article author set it. [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Enterprise https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Enterprise
- sandworm101 6y agoIt is shameful that that wikipedia entry doesn't have a single picture of the original enterprise as seen on TV. All those pics are of the more recent digital recreations. TOS's use of models gave it a realism that is sadly lacking today. https://scifanatic-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/tos-series-enterprise-k7.jpg https://scifanatic-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upload... That is a real object. Held up by strings, but it is a physical thing, built by hand out of wood and duct tape. That's why it doesn't have that clean shimmering look of perfectly flat non-existent digital surfaces. But put it up against an image of any realworld spacecraft and that model is closer to reality than any digital creation. http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/1280px-STS-132_Atlantis_at_ISS_1.jpg http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/1280px...
- Gibbon1 6y agoBest thing I read along those lines was a prop guy talking about how for the second Star Wars moving how they carefully made a full sized model out of galvanized steel then gave it a bad paint job followed by hitting it with a blow torch and a water pipe.
- app4soft 6y ago> It is shameful that that wikipedia entry doesn't have a single picture of the original enterprise as seen on TV. It included in article on Wikipedia as first illustration![0] Picture description under it look like: > NCC-1701, main setting of the original Star Trek series. Maybe in mobile version of Wikipedia it is more visible.[1] [0] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USS_Enterprise_(NCC-1701),_ENT1231.jpg https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USS_Enterprise_(NCC-170... - sandworm101 6y agoAnd that is exactly why it is shameful. You have confused the digital version, the version added in recent years to make the series more palatable for HD tv, with the original model shots. The original enterprise was never pink/purple. The original, as seen on TV, isn't on that wikipedia page. People will see that page and think that is what it looked like back in the 70s. That is why wikipedia is not a historical resource. Also, note the aspect ratio. The original series was 4:3, not 16:9.
- NiceWayToDoIT 6y agoI like it, it is artsy and put a smile on my face.
- toast0 6y agoTurning a 3.5" floppy disk's shutter and hub into a starship. 5.25" and 8" floppy holders need not apply.
- Shorel 6y agoI think I saw this blog entry and made one of these starships long before 2013.
