- zxcvbn4038 6y agoI'm still in disbelief canned Stargate Universe after two seasons. Last 2 seasons of SG-1 was just garbage, Stargate Atlantis was about as cheesy as the 80s Buck Rogers series. But to me Universe stood out as kind of the anti-Star Trek -- instead of the magical space ship that can go anywhere and do anything the plot requires, you've got the dodgy rust bucket that just goes one direction and you can't really do much other then be along for the ride. Kind of like the way James Bond was more or less limited to the gadgets that Q gave him at the start of the movie vs cartoon character that can produce any object from its pocket at will.
- WrtCdEvrydy 6y agoIt's interesting seeing people's opinion on the series going this way... people rebelled against Universe and were looking SG1 and Atlantis with rose tinted glasses.
- AnIdiotOnTheNet 6y agoI disagree with your assessment of both the final two seasons of SG-1 (surely season 1 and 6 were worse), and of Stargate Atlantis... and even Universe I guess. I think one of the best Teal'c moments is in those last two season, and that Ben Browder did a pretty good job replacing RDA all things considered. Plus, "200" is in there so come on. Atlantis was a very different show in a lot of ways, more Star-Trek-y than SG-1 but it worked, and Picardo got to be part of the main cast for a season which was pretty great. Universe had maybe 3 good episodes in its entire run and suffered terribly from what I call "Lost Syndrom"[0]. It started to come together at the end, there's even a point where some competent writer comes in and hand-waves away some of the stupider plot ideas as "it was all a dream", but overall it was pretty disastrous I think. [0] The writers pretend there is some master plan that will make all the mysterious dangling plot threads come together eventually but really they're just making up crazy bullshit as they go.
- johnisgood 6y agoI loved SGU but then again, I was doing a dissociative called DXM at the time (stupid teen I was) so I actually "felt" (well, actually the opposite happens) the plot, it was amazing. I started with SGA, that got me into Stargate. I watched the entire SGA series, and SG-1 did not live up to the entertainment SGA provided for me. Make no mistake, I like SG-1 too, but I love SGA the most for its entertainment value (I laughed a lot), and I love SGU for its drama, not so much laughter, I did not actually laugh I think but I was immersed into the plot. SGA for fun/survival/exploration, SGU for drama/survival/exploration. SG-1 was kind of everything in all fairness, but I missed Rodney McKay and John Sheppard from it. They made SGA amazing for me, along with the occasional Zelenka. :D SG-1 aired when I was a kid, I hated Stargate when I was a kid, but as an adult, I fucking love it. I still get nostalgic over it sometimes. The actors are so old and different now. :(
- Izkata 6y agoSGU had an amazing concept, but I think you're forgetting just how much the first season focused on soap-opera-style content instead of what drew everyone to the franchise in the first place. It only really started moving away from those plots in the second half of the second season - after the cancellation was already announced. For SG-1, the finale of the 8th season was intended as a bookended series finale, it getting renewed was unexpected. However, I think they handled it well, continuing the series long theme: First, the Goa'uld who pretended to be gods with technology, then the Ori who truly had powers of gods. Teal'c has a good line at some point where when talking to the other Jaffa he has to change tactics, changing his argument from "they are not gods" to "are they worthy of being called gods?" I also find it interesting that you liked the SGU concept but not so much SGA, considering the part you called out has a parallel with that one: For the majority of the series, Atlantis was a mystery not truly under control of the expedition. They gained access to it bit by bit the same as the Destiny.
- zxcvbn4038 6y agoI admit that I don’t care for the country music interludes of the SGU first season and was happy without them in the second season. Some of the personal subplots and flashbacks were distracting but figured that was just their way of staying within their effects budget. For gritty sci-fi I think Expanse is the one to beat.
- jrootabega 6y agoSGU was such a blatant attempt to recreate Battlestar Galactica, and I can't believe more people didn't see through it. I believe it got good once they started establishing their own identity. Atlantis was certainly different, but equally entertaining.
- _nothing 6y agoI hated SGU for exactly that reason-- was an extremely obvious ripoff of BSG. Obvious even to me as a kid. I was like, if I wanted to watch Battlestar Galactica I would just watch Battlestar Galactica. I didn't come here for a soap opera in space, I came here for space adventures just as with SG-1 and SGA (both of which I loved). /rant
