OK, What Is Room-Temperature Superconducting and Will It Change Everything?
- raziel2701 6y agoI wonder if Kamerlingh Onnes' rationale in 1911 to cool down mercury and measure its resistivity was simply: "I wonder what happens at low T?" Nowadays I have to write lengthy proposals with detailed budgets and milestone achievements that make you feel like you should already know the outcome of your experiments and it makes you question why would I even do the experiment if I already knew the result? Then there's the parochial committees that review and critique your proposal and tell you that you need to think like them and propose ideas that are derived from their mental models of reality. Stamping out any diversity of thought. Any accidental discoveries happen despite of this system and not because of it, but history is revised to make it look like all the good things happen because of the bureaucratic scientific complex. Signed, a disgruntled scientist.
