I am sure you have an alternative suitable and ready for the masses?
- tomcooks 6y agoHTML. Accessible, lighter, works on screen readers, extensible, a standard.
- numlock86 6y agoYou forgot the horror of printing and rogue JS assisted bitcoin mining.
- k_sze 6y agoPrinting can actually be fixed with the right CSS. The opposite is not true for PDF: you can't fix PDF for responsive rendering. As for rogue JS, there are good, open-source countermeasures such as dompurify.
- numlock86 6y agoSure, once we settle one one specific browser, that might be a good idea for publishing things. I have yet to see a HTML with CSS that renders the same on every browser. (A blank page does not count!)
- k_sze 6y agoepub 2 and epub 3 are both much better formats than PDF if you really want to publish ebooks. PDF is not reflowable and results in a crappy reading experience unless the device screen size is just right.
- cicero 6y agoPDF is ultimately for paper when you care about how the content fits on each page. A reflowable format will have to at some point be rendered to pages if one is to go to paper, and I can't think of anything better than PDF for storing that rendering.
- k_sze 6y agoepub is basically many html files packaged together and indexed. So rendering for printing can be taken care of with the right media-querying CSS.
