Ask HN: Resistor Codes and Bad Boys
OK so the PC version is...
Bad Boys Race Our Young Girls But Violet Generally Wins.
Should I be keeping the real EDIT old phrase to myself?
- eindiran 6y agoWikipedia lists dozens of mnemonics, including a number of sexual, racist, sexist or otherwise offensive variants: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_color_code_mnemonics https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_color_code_... The article includes a story about a professor who specifically mentions one offensive variant as a reason she felt alienated at MIT in the 80s, leading her to leave the program. Moreover, there’s a story about a teacher being reprimanded for using an offensive variant. I think all of this adds up to: yes, it is probably best if you keep the offensive version to yourself.
