HN weigh in: What do you think dies first: HTML or UTF-8?
- WorldMaker 6y agoGiven the evidence of ASCII and EBCDIC (and Baudot and Morse) over time, I definitely think it would be UTF-8 that outlasts HTML whatever happens. That said, I also don't see HTML dying any time soon, given known alternatives and current momentum, and this attempt at "not-quite-Gopher over HTTP" is fascinating, if maybe irrational. (Aside: Given the history of Unicode to date, had you asked about UTF-16 or UCS-4/UTF-32 [the current 32-bit "full encoding"], I'd have been a lot more hesitant. But UTF-8 looks like it'll survive even crazy things like Unicode deciding they need a "UCS-8/UTF-64" in the future.)
