The revocation of the Fairness Doctrine in 1985 introduced Americans to the concept that our media could be biased. Then, Craigslist and Web 2.0 spelled doom for your local paper. This severely limited the job market for reporters and centralized the media industry. Finally, the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act in 2012 made it legal for the CIA to propagandize the U.S. public. The media is now mostly a megaphone for "sources familiar with the matter." Love Trump, hate him, or just don't care, but it's entirely rational to distrust the U.S. media, and that will be true long after Trump.
