Ask HN: What Programming Font do you use?
- sp332 6y agoI went with Proggy TT with slashed zeros for a long time. Using a bitmapped font seems less necessary now that I have a 4k monitor, so I've defaulted to Consolas (in Visual Studio Code and also for my terminal sessions), which is nice enough that I haven't been actively looking for a replacement.
- piculet 6y agoCurrently loving Fira Code. Took some time to get used to ligatures, but they actually work pretty nicely. In addition to ligatures there are lot of well thought design details that increase legibility. https://github.com/tonsky/FiraCode https://github.com/tonsky/FiraCode
- karmakaze 6y agoEvery now and again, I'll find some new programming font and try it out, retrying all my other installed fonts. Retesting is important as my display setup (and vision--can't read 2880x1800 native on Macbook anymore) have likely also changed. Now using Fira Code Light in IntelliJ/RubyMine dark theme, size 14, line spacing 1.05 with ligatures disabled. Before that I think I used Input Mono since it came with so many widths it was pretty easy to find one that hit a mark.
- kopos 6y agoCurrently it is JetBrains Mono Earlier - IBM Plex - Fira Sans - Operator Mono - Source Code Pro
- meagher 6y ago+1 to JetBrains Mono Also, pro tip: You can install fonts on macOS using homebrew.
- rraghur 6y agoFantasque sans mono and iosevka term curly Both are on github
- cercatrova 6y agoSF Pro Mono with Powerline symbols. I use it on all my OS actually, not just macOS but Windows and Linux as well. You can download it off GitHub repositories. Probably against Apple's TOS, but well, it's a nice font.
- frou_dh 6y agoThey offer a normal download these days: https://developer.apple.com/fonts/ https://developer.apple.com/fonts/ I like SF Mono. Use it anywhere I have HiDPI.
- cercatrova 6y agoThat doesn't have the Powerline icons, so if you use a terminal theme with it, such as Powerlevel10k, it won't render correctly. The Powerline icons are added into the font so it has to be modded, which is only available on GitHub repos as far as I can tell.
- mikewarot 6y agoI never thought about changing it until just now. Courier New 12pt.
- Wezl 6y agoI use a custom font[1] I made ;). I'm still learning bits of typography, so it's not the most legible, but it was fun to make. [1]: https://ermineii.github.io/befont.html https://ermineii.github.io/befont.html
- max_ 6y agoCool, how do I make my own font? Any recommended tools?
- Wezl 6y agoI've only tried Glyphr[0] because it's online and gbdfed because it was in my linux distro's package manager and it was small (turns out it was a bitmap editor, which was fun to try out, but now I have a .bdf file that I don't know how to use). I can't really recommend these because they are the only ones I've tried, but Glyphr is simple though it doesn't have that many features. Then find a way to use the font, like on a website, and you'll notice any problems or ugly parts. [0]: http://www.glyphrstudio.com/ http://www.glyphrstudio.com/
- oftenwrong 6y agoLiberation Mono. I haven't thought much about this choice. I only really care that similar characters are easily distinguishable, such as '1' and 'l'.
- tmearnest 6y agoI’ve tried a lot, and I still do, but I always come back to Mononoki https://madmalik.github.io/mononoki/ https://madmalik.github.io/mononoki/
- karmakaze 6y agoThis looks good. Might try it as a terminal font.
- dyingkneepad 6y agoI really like Ubuntu Mono Regular. I don't use Ubuntu, but I install its font in other distros and even Windows.
- zzo38computer 6y agoI use the Fixed (6x13) bitmap font. It is good for display on screen, and they are not fuzzy like vector fonts are.
- faizmokhtar 6y agoI'm using 18pt Iosevka variations https://github.com/be5invis/Iosevka https://github.com/be5invis/Iosevka
- ksherlock 6y agoSignetics 2513
- approxim8ion 6y agoJetBrains Mono as my system and terminal font. It's very easy on the eyes.
- justinlloyd 6y agoI really need a TTF of Hells Programmer. 8,000+ lines of code in a few vertical columns on an 8K monitor in portrait mode please.
