As a relatively inexperienced JVM developer I pretty much share this view. It's true that PHP isn't PHP 4 anymore, but everything else moved forward as well, Java 11 is a fine language that I have few complaints about. Since you mentioned GraalVM, I'm also pretty excited about the Graal nodejs runtime. I'm a fan of using JS/TS for quick projects, and unifying the runtime would be huge, I hope it will continue to be supported.
