- ei8htyfi5e 6y agoThey eat once a day... so I’m sure they’re fine...
- waihtis 6y agoFun fact: Mice can only survive 48 hours without food, so not eating for 24 hours is quite long for them.
- treeman79 6y agoHad recently gotten two mice. We were upstairs when we realized it was the first ice cold night of the year. So we went down and mice are cuddled in the cold , and apparently out of food. Someone decided fruit loops mixed in with mouse food was a good idea. One mouse went and ate. Other one was clearly in roughed shap. First mouse took a fruit loop, walked it over, and kept putting it against the others mouth. After couple minutes she started eating. The sheer empathy of one mouse helping another still gets to me. They both were fine after eating and being moved to a warm spot.
- eznzt 6y agoWhat determines how long you can survive without food? The speed of your metabolism?
- fpoling 6y agoMostly how much fat and muscle tissue one has. The known record under medical supervision is over a year, but that person was very fat at the start.
- sfourdrinier 6y agoactually there are studies especially from David Sinclair that shows that fasting and calorie restrictions help mice live longer and healthier. For those interested here is a great interview with David Sinclair, Harvard Researcher on aging: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZqAKNPxaxc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZqAKNPxaxc
- fredophile 6y agoI'm very skeptical of any diet related advice based on studying mice. Mouse metabolism is very different from human metabolism.. Fasting a mouse for 24 hours will result in a fairly large loss of body mass. Fasting a person for 24 hours will result in a pound or two of weight loss. I'm not against doing these kinds of studies on mice but the only conclusion you can really get is that we should do longer studies on animals that are closer to humans or on humans themselves.
- thesz 6y agoPound of fat, or, in SI, 453 grams of fat, is 4077 calories (9 calories per gram of fat). Most probably, weight loss will be less than pound in water calorie restriction. Also, there was studies on Ramadan fasting and they've found almost two fold increase of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor at the end of fast. Level of BDNF correlates with neuroneogenesis in brain.
