This is just an escalation of the "groupthink" pervasive throughout the more progressive circles. Every 100 years or so it seems to explode into a full civil unrest/conflict or war. IMHO it indicates that we, as a species, are built/evolved to exist in small tribes and cannot cope with large societies or crowds.
