You're trying to shove 10 gallons of shit into a 5-gallon bucket! -- I'm not sure how high you can set the MTU on those Pi's (the Intels should handle 9000) but I'd set them as high as they'll go, if I were you. An MTU of 9000 basically means ~1/6th the interrupts.
