6 Republican States Tried to Stop Facebook’s Effort to Register Voters
- Corrado 6y agoA quote from the article states "election officials alone are “legally and morally responsible to our citizens” and said Facebook has “no such accountability.”" Do these states also reject the "Rock the Vote" campaign that MTV promoted back in the 90's? I'm guessing there are countless other organizations that are encouraging voting and voting registration. I get emails almost daily about it. Are these states also seeking to quell those movements as well? Could Facebook be on the right side of morality this time? Is there any downside to getting people registered to vote? Could Facebook influence people to register as one party over another?
- jfengel 6y agoIt's generally thought that the demographics of people who don't vote tend to match one party over the other -- poorer, less white, more recently immigrated, less likely to speak English. Registration campaigns also double as get-out-the-vote campaigns, which are thought to affect similar demographics. And yes, Rock the Vote was thought to have a similarly partisan effect. It didn't face this kind of organized governmental opposition, because Facebook is seen as being far more influential. But RtV did draw criticism from party officials for its efforts.
