I am doing this right now. Using cloud services for work would mean using the exorbitantly expensive services from Azure, to say nothing of the painful and annoying experience that using Azure is at the best of times. Instead, I can spend a moderate amount, build a machine that is more than adequate for work requirements will last ages, write it off on tax and still end up spending way less than I would have renting a cloud machine for a couple of months.
