Surprisingly it’s been around for almost 30 years and Mitsubishi was using Lidar way back in ‘91.

- Rebelgecko 6y agoBecause the car throttles itself up and down appropriately, which at least for me is the main annoyance when driving in traffic. IIRC, rear end collisions due to innatentive driving are also the most common type of car accident
- NovemberWhiskey 6y agoThe other thing to bear in mind is that the capability is way higher now than in the past, despite the feature having the same name. It works perfectly with multiple lanes of closely-spaced traffic, through bends, bad weather etc. It actually uses the brakes rather than just engine-braking when necessary. It works well enough in stop-and-go traffic. It doesn't lose its mind if people merge in front of you.
- chris11 6y agoI wouldn't consider it self driving. But the hw for LKA and adaptive cruise control can do a lot. That's all that Comma AI's Open Pilot needs, and a Toyota with TSS 2.0 is considered the best platform for Open Pilot. I definitely wouldn't say it's self driving but using Open Pilot gives you a really nice hands free experience driving on the highway.
